1 Day RM50
Just like the female host in one of the Astro program which suggested viewers to go around the city and have nice cuisines up to 5 meals a day in a budget of RM50, I too had a luxury to play a one day RM50 budget game myself on Saturday because of my stingy expense plan of the month that got me some money left to spend by month end (mostly people would over spend and left nothing much by month end, to surprisingly this month I was the reverse~).
And boy oh boy did I lavish myself with all kinds of food and now I am more than 62kg with a lot of stored fat around my waist I could feel the tension when putting on my working pants (they are all 30″ size) Not that I want to get on a diet though because I am still 2 kg away from my 2008 resolution, hehe.
I also got to know the Rachel Ray show with $40 a day from a US show, and that got me thinking: If a country like America spends $40 a day for good meals as a show and Malaysia spends RM50 a day, does it mean that Malaysian living cost (food) is 20% more than the USA? Somehow I find this statement prone to the truth because that Saturday I went to eat fast food (Carl’s Jr) and I spent RM25 on a combo set for a lunch alone. Sure the portion is huge, but the price for a fast food is ridiculous if you were to spend $25 on fast food in USA.
And then we went to eat Dim Sum at a local coffee shop which the condition is nothing to restaurant, we ordered 5 Dim Sum, 1 lotus leaf rice, 2 bowl of porridge (each is 1 person’s portion), 3 drinks and that cost us RM28++ can you believe that? It was so expensive~
Food in Malaysia is getting more and more pricey, it is really hard to imagine if I were to put RM50 on meal budget for a day, I would have RM1500 to budget on food alone, that is entirely the salary of an admin clerk!! For a TV host sure it doesn’t sound bad at all to them, but to many lower income (which the government recently declared that RM2000 and below a month is considered low income) this is so much more of a problem.
I can’t compare myself with the condition that is happening in Zimbabwe but somehow I understand how they must have felt about their lousy government…
